Login Server Not Found Error

I have a simple network at home involving 3 WinXP
machines. The network does not have a domain. I use a
simple workgroup. All 3 of these computers can see each
other and share resources (files, printer etc.)

My wife has a laptop from work that is running some
flavour of Windows 2000. The network at her place of work
uses a domain server and she logs into the domain account
when at work and at home. With this setup she used to be
able to join my simple workgroup and access the computers
on it with no problem including the printer.

Last week her IT department decided to move her account to
a different domain. They took her laptop and configured it
appropriately. Now, however, she can't access my workgroup
at home. She can see the computers in the network
neighbourhood but she gets an error when actually trying
to access them: Login server not found.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try:

1. Did IT give her a new user name or password? If so, you will have to
create a duplicate username/password account on each of your WinXP machines.

2. Check the laptop's TCP/IP properties to see if IT manually configured
any settings. If so, you will have to change them or change your
workgroup's settings to be compatable.

Thanks for your response Doug.

Yes IT did give her a new username/password. I setup an
account using this criteria on one of the XP machines. I
still wasn't able to access it from the laptop. I also
tried renaming the workgroup to the same name as the
domain the laptop normally logs into. No go.

Oh, yes. I did check the tcp/ip settings. They look the
same as the XP machines. The only thing that caught my
eye was the lmhost file under the WINS tab. All machines
(including the laptop) are set to use one. I didn't
actually check the contents of this file. Do you think
this could be the cause?

BTW, the actual error I'm seeing is:

\\Printserver is not accessible

There are currently no logon servers available to serive
the logon request.

If the laptop is still joined to a domain instead of the workgroup, logon to
the local machine instead of the domain. You may have to click the options
button at the logon screen to do this, and you will have to use a local
username and password. Usually logging onto the local machine when
connected to a workgroup which has the same name as the NetBIOS name of the
domain will allow browsing.

If you still cannot browse, try: Start\Run \\<IPaddressofPrintserver>\c$

If the laptop actually has an lmhosts (no extension) file, open it with
Notepad. If it contains entries for the domain or any machines with the
same name as computers on your network, you should temporarily rename or
move the file.
