Login Box - delete old login names

How do I delete the old login names from the "pop-up" login box that appears
when I enter a pasword protected page? I have several old login names and no
longer need them.

In IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Content tab....Autocomplete, then
click Clear Forms or Clear Passwords. This will remove all such entries in
all boxes. If you want to clear an entry individually, click on it to
highlight it then press the Delete key.

That did not work. The old usernames are still there.
The box is actuially labeled: "Connect to" as I am entering a remote mail
server.
Any other ideas?

Perhaps there is an old password associated with it too?
Try using the PSPV freeware tool?

BTW which OS is this? See Bob Brannon's recent thread
for some related discussion for an XPsp2 case.

Note that that was specifically an AutoComplete password issue
(we think), not the type of userid and password you are trying to get
rid of.

FWIW I think what I would probably try is to use the PSPV tool
only as a diagnostic to show the state of the Protected Storage values
and try workarounds such as redefining the account and trying to delete
it properly afterwards. There are numerous examples in software where
deleting a container without first deleting its contents leaves its contents
behind with no way of accessing those contents. Your case may be like that.
Of course there is no guarantee that creating a new container (e.g. account)
and new contents (userid and password) will mean that the old contents
get reused and become reaccessable but I think it would be worth a shot.

Another approach to diagnosing the problem would be to use
RegMon (from SysInternals) filtering on your orphan userid.
E.g. it could be that the cause of the symptom you are complaining
about is a unknown registry value which could just be deleted once
it is found. Etc.

Good luck
