Log on password line, astericks very slow!

When I start up Windows 2000, sp4, and the log on screen comes up, the line where my
password is represented by a number of astericks (*s) takes 15-30 seconds before the
astericks fill in the space. This used to be instantaneous. Is there anywhere I can
look to try to fix this problem?

type
eventvwr.msc
click OK

check for any clues in there
