Looking to log on to a server, but there is no drop down on XP log on screen.

The "Log on to:" box doesn't appear unless the computer has been joined to a
domain. (if this is what you mean)

Having a server and having a domain.. two different things.
The workstation would have to be a member of a domain that said server is a
domain controller for..
Google from there..
