everytime I close my notebook it logs me off and kicks me off my instant
messenger (AIM). how can i stop it from doing this?

Most notebooks have an option for what action should be taken when the unit
is closed. Trying looking under the power options

That's due to the default power settings being enabled. Go change your power
settings, click Start Menu --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Power Options.
Click the "Advanced" tab and change he settings under the "Power buttons"
subheading.
In the case of your laptop, you're looking to change the first box (marked
"When I close the lid of my portable computer"), since you want to prevent
it from shutting down when you close the lid.
