Can we have a small debate on whether logmein or other free "secured" access to your family's/friend's etc PCs are safe.

I am looking at maintaining the family's pcs remotely but don't want sensitive data going into the wrong hands.

Can I have views on ways to allow access.

I have a dynamic IP and one will be using a modem not a router.

No "connection" to the Internet is "safe" ... but hey, a discussion is good. :thumb:

I find the telephone works for me ... :)

never heard of "logmein"

if the O/S is XPPRO your best best is RDP it's encrypted and makes good use of bandwidth.

OS is XP HOME.

And the telephone is good if the people you are speaking to know what an icon, mouse and keyboard are!

But yes lets discuss this further, any good software people using, freeware, problems including Security issues?

I'll second that - using RDP on 3 PC's and it works a treat :)

Easy, secure & can be accessed from any WinXP/2000/2003 client.

is that Remote assistance then or is that totally different.

I have tried to use it but although I get an remail from the remote I can't get on to the system. Is this router or firewall problems and what ports etc need to be opened. Remember Dynamic IP so it can change fron day to day and Idont wan tthe family playing about with settings on firewalls.

"Easy, secure & can be accessed from any WinXP/2000/2003 client"

can be accessed from any O/S with a GUI.

RDP uses TCP port 3389 this port will need to be forwarded to the host if behind a NAT firewall.

Yes it's the same as remote desktop and very similar to remote assistance (uses the same technology) you just connect differently with remote assistance.

Dynamic IP's can be over come by using www.no-ip.com, (or other dynamic dns solution) i use them and have had no problems and best of all they're free.

Sorry to revive a month and a half old thread but I just wanted to chime in to say that I absolutely love Logmein and that it's made a lot of things simpler for me round the house and the office!

Would like to know more!!!!!

HI all,

Just wanted to know how remote desktop connection would work. As i have not read much about it can somebody tell me, does it work if both the systems have XP home. And if not what could be the solution which is secure enough to connect 2 machines.

You can use XP home to RDP to XP Pro but not the other way around.

google it there are loads of apps that allow to remotely control another PC like dameware, VNC, PC Anyware etc.
