Locks up windows when connected.

When I connect online (dial up), I cannot open new windows and IE and OE go
"not responding." If I look on task manager (that I have to start before
connecting) System Idle is at 99 percent and there is no network activity
(i.e. nothing is says it is tying up the system). If I start something, say
IE, iexporer.exe shows up on the processes tab but never actually starts. If
I disconnect (which takes multiple attempts) every program that I tried to
start suddenly pops up.

I just figured out that if I terminate MSASCui.exe everything suddenly
works! So why is Windows Defender hanging my system? Is it trying to
connect to a service when I go online? I would hate to have to unintall this!

What definitions are shown at the bottom of the Windows Defender home page?

I've seen some reports like this before, and tend to think that this is a
definition update request via BITS that is not working as designed.

Is there any chance you can just let it set for perhaps 10 minutes, and see
whether it manages to do anything useful?

I assume you are talking about the Signature version which is 1.14.1436.4
built on 5/1/2006 at 8:15 PM.

I have waited an unknown amount of time (walked off and did something else)
and it's just hung. Getting my wife to wait ten minutes is out of the
question!

If this is supported through Auto Updates, why another check (BITS)? Do I
need to add this to the firewall exceptions? Is there a way to disable it?

Sir, I think I have the same exact problem…

I really can’t remember WHEN it actually started. I have installed IE7 Beta
2 and Windows Defender Beta 2. I am not really sure if Windows Defender or
IE7 is the reason for this but this problem occurred before I installed those
two. I don't know if your experience is the same as mine but as I have
noticed after I connected to the internet(dial-up), I cannot start any
program(IE, online games, Winamp, etc..) although I can browse my hard drive
in My computer. These programs shows up in the processes tab as well but
never show up in the desktop. These programs show up more or less 20 mins.
after I get connected or when I disconnect the connection. I also have to
start task manager before I connect so that it shows up. I also noticed that
even if I start IE before I connect, it still hangs up after I get connected.
Also when I right-click the desktop after I am connected, explorer hangs up.

Do you happen to have installed or used Spybot S&D or any other anti-spyware
software because my hunch on this is that this happened after I fixed
problems found in Spybot. I am not sure about this though.

I would like to suggest (with your approval) for us to compare our installed
apps and hardware so that we can determine what our systems have in common
besides Defender.

Hello,
Yes, this is the EXACT same problem. Now I am not sure if it is Defender
either as I terminated it and was still locked out again yesterday. This
morning I connected like nothing was wrong (about fell out of my chair).

I cannot really say if it is IE7 or Defender. It started long after
upgrading to Defender. And it seems like IE7 ran for a couple of weeks
before this problem started. Now I’m wondering if it is the auto update of
my virus protection. I am running Avast anti-virus. I terminated the update
program yesterday and was suddenly unlocked… but then again, I did that with
Defender one time too (which is why this discussion was started here).

The things I can think of that would try to go online on my machine are:
IE7; OE6; Defender; Avast anti-virus; Upromise RemindeU (which is annoying,
but not the problem); World Community Grid agent (also not the problem);
Windows Messenger 4.7; WMP10. I am not running the Spybot you mentioned.

I did find a neat program from Microsoft call Port Reporter. It shows
svchost.exe with a PID 860 connecting to eight different things when I go
online. This svchost.exe PID 860 pointed back to something called the Remote
Procedure Call service. But that is depended on by about twenty other
services... so now I am stuck again

I'm glad to hear I am not alone in this (misery loves company).

Hi,

I think I may have solved the problem. I stumbled upon this thread titled
"Internet connection hang in IE6" in the windows defender newsgroup. Thinking
that maybe the root of the problem is when i removed malware/adware, I took
the risk and tried the remedies suggested to it particularly the "winsock xp
fix" and the command "netsh winsock reset". After a couple of reboots the
system works fine, for now. I don't know if this will have the same results
to your system. I am keeping an eye if the problem will happen again alhough
it never came up after i got connected many times now.

There is a possibility that these solutions might cause more problems than
fix them, I'm checking on that too. Be sure to backup registry before trying
those I've mentioned. But after I did those, the problem never occured again
and no new problems came up.

Btw, i have xp pro sp2, ie7, win defender, spybot s&d, and avast. And i did
remove malware/adware using spybot s&d which was way before i installed win
defender.

Thanks,
Brylle

Hello,

I think it was the May 2006 update of Avast (which you are also running).
If I terminate all of their update programs (aswUpdSv.exe, avast.setup and
setup.ovr) everything magically works (everytime). I've sent them an email
about the issue.

How exactly do you do the "winsock xp fix?" I'll have to look that up.

Good luck.
