I would like to lock up the internet when I am not using it. I have
DLS, and would like to find a way to lock access to the internet fro
my kids. How do I do this

Just the internet or the whole computer?
What sort of internet connection do you have? (dial-up, DSL, cable..)

What ages are your kids, and how sharp are they about computers?

You could create a limited user account for them on your system and then disable the network card
through your admin account, as limited users I don't think they can re-enable the NIC.

Block your kids from having access to one of the greatest
sources of knowledge in history? Why on earth would
you want do do that??? The Internet is here to stay. It's
become part of our culture. It's a wonderful resource.
Teach them how to use it!

Whatever you do, they will be smart enough to undo it.
Here's a thought...how about being a parent and monitoring their online
activity?

Clearly you do not have children or you are ignorant

I had a similar situation with my ex. She wanted the PC to be restricted for
her kids access. I installed "Net Nanny", which allowed me to block any
"unsuitable" content from being accessed by her kids.
There were 2 of them, so I set up seperate accounts with different settings
(One was more prone to look for porn than the other one)
..

It also allowed me to lock the computer on either a time-basis (like, once
they should be in bed) and ban sites that contain sexually explicit images.

I would recommend Net Nanny to anyone who requires this kind of internet
restriction. It takes a while to sit down and learn how to configure it
properly, but it would be worth it if you're worried about what your kids
access.

Oh, and not only did it monitor internet, but it could block chat rooms,
yahoo + msn
messenger, and send me an email once a week with a full report which I could
see what child tried to do what!

(It also gave me a good list of porn sites I could visit! haha!)

Hope this helps?

For some requirements, you may find it easier to invest in a
3rd-party solution, such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol.

You need to be aware, however, that *NO* technical or software
solution is fool-proof, and _none_ can ever adequately take the place of
live adult supervision. If youcannot trust your children to
safely/properly use the computer without supervision, you may have to
consider limiting their access to it.

I have DSL conection. I would like to lock the internet only. I a
concerned of what the kids may find if I or my husband are not aroun
and they get on. The other night when we were asleep one of the girl
entered the internet. I want to make sure this dose not happen agai

That depends on how much you know about computers.

The ideal: Always be with your kids when they are on a computer, or have
them supervised by another adult you can trust. If your kids are sneaking
in to access the computer after bedtime, try putting the computer in your
bedroom or a locked office.

The simple solution: Unplug the modem and keep it locked away when you're
not using it. Make sure the kids can't get the key.

The technical solution: Create user accounts in Windows XP. Force users to
log on with a password. Either set the kids to have limited access and
disable the modem for their accounts, or don't tell them their password if
they should only use it under supervision and you can log in for them.

I agree with Eric here, although it could be as simple as one user
account with the computer, and mom and dad have the password. If a
child wants to go online, they have to get mom or dad to enter the
password first.

And such things block a lot of legit sites as well.

100% with you and Bob (except perhaps the monitoring part - we monitor as
parents not as IT security folks!). A childs development and future
achievement splits about 20% with the school and 80% with the parents (from
accredited recent research). When parents don't do their part the impact is
massive.

We don't do TV's or PC's in bedrooms (which a frightening number of people
consider harsh or stone age) but they do have full and free access to TV
and PC in the family areas of the house. This helps ensure sleep at the
right times and is an antidote to kids becoming isolated and then heading
off down the wrong track.

My kids are now 16 and 19 and have had internet access for ten years - its
not proved to be a problem. I don't feel particularly ignorant on the topic
of kids and schools.

And when the kinds need to access one of those site, they can come to me and
ask, and I'll open it up for them.

You could try commercially available software. You can use it to
restrict/limit Internet access for different users. You need a program
that is flexible, in order so that different people can have different
restrictions. This is possible with the program Chornoger at
http://www.softforyou.com. You can use it to establish the limits
according to individual users. It follows that you could set the
program so that (for instance) a young child can access the Internet
just for 2 hours a day in the evening, whilst an older child can
access it for longer.
