My question.

Is there a freeware program that blocks all those open ports without
closing important ones that needs to be left open? I'm afraid If I try
myself to monkey with it I'll mess something up, and close an important
port.

It seems like I'm always getting worms ect. and I have avast and AVG on
the winxp and I suspect they are getting through a open port.

Yes

port.

How might you do that?

This is entirely down to user/puter interface disfunctionality. No
software can protect you in this environment.
and I have avast and AVG

Disable one of them.

XP is great for non techie types. If you mess something up, it usually fixes
itself. If not, simply RESTORE to the last good configuration.

If you're using Windows XP, enable the internet connection firewall
(ICF), and then patch your system. That will keep out 99% of the
baddies. Use common sense for the other 1% (don't run strange
attachments, don't visit sites of bad reputation, run an antivirus and
anti-spyware ap, etc) and you'll likely be fine.
