can i lock down an A drive or even a CDRW in windows 2000 security. i have win2k all around, and would like to be able to limit what people can copy off the hard drive.

thank you

Many cd burning programs require the user to be an administrator in order to
write to the cd, so you may want to use one of those applications. As far as
floppy drive, there is a Resource Kit Utility called floplock that you may want
to try. Other wise you need to use a case that blocks access to the removable
media drives, remove the drive, disconnect the cable, or disable it in cmos
which would also require password protecting cmos settings and locking the
computer case. Also keep in mind that usb flash drives can also be used. You
should be able to disable built in usb in cmos. --- Steve

steve where might i find the resource kit utility? is it a microsoft download?

i've been mulling over the usb issue also. each workstation has a few usb devices on it, so i don't think i can disable the usb port itself. i am hoping to try to find a way to disable write permissions to drives, since the usb flash drive will apear as a logical drive, there may be something to that.

i will check into floplock right away. that's going to be very helpful thank you!

See links below including one to a KB article that relates to controlling USB
storage access, though the article pertains to XP and I have not personally
tried it out, but may be worth a look. --- Steve

Can I suggest you take a look at a product called Disknet Pro
www.reflex-magnetics.com. This product should allow you to control
access to all types of removable media including USB Flash media and
floppy disks.
