Locked Word for 2003 XP after update

I updated my 2003 Word XP and now I can't make any new
word docs. or edit any existing docs. I can view, print,
or send to disk only. I didn't add a password, and the
gray toolbars won't let me access the password option.
Can anyone help me restore my system without doing an
entire system restore?

You might want to post this to one of the office groups to get a better
response. But before you do, figure out which version you have. Word 2003
and Word XP are different versions.
