locked with limited account

1. Logon as administrator. (For XP Home, boot into safe mode)
2. Click Start | run | type "Control Userpasswords"
3. Click the user account and change the type to "Administrator"
4. Restart

Reread the first line - you must logon as administrator to change the type
for your normal account.

He can't.

Some manufacturers are shipping machines with the
Administrator account hidden so it doesn't appear on the
Welcome screen, and the default user is also a member of
the Administrator group - if you change that user into a
Limited user then you'll never be able to log on with
Administrator rights again. I have a brand new Toshiba
laptop (with XP Pro) here like that. The only way to log
on as Administrator is to turn the Welcome screen off and
use "Classic" logon where you can type in
the "Administrator" user name.

If someone out there knows how to fix this and make the
Administrator appear on the Welcome screen, I'd love to
know because when you switch to Classic logon you lose the
fast user switching capability.

I've even gone as far as comparing the registries between
this laptop and a Compaq desktop with XP Pro which does
have Administrator on the Welcome screen and I can't find
how they did it.

The default 'System Administrator' account is hidden as soon as another
account with Administrator priveledges is created.

You still have access to the System Administrator account though. In XP Pro,
you can simply press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the logon screen to make this
account appear. In XP Home, you must boot into safe mode to see the System
Administrator account.

You can also get the free TweakUI utility from Microsoft which has an option
to unhide the Administrator account so that it is always visible on the
login screen.

There's nothing to fix. Having the default builtin Administrator account
hidden is normal. It should be used specifically for troubleshooting
situations such as these so having it "just out of reach" is by design.

To log on to that account in XP Home:
Boot to Safe Mode. Type in Administrator for the user name. Leave password
blank.

For XP Pro:
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice to bring up the Win2000 style logon prompt. Enter
Administrator for user name. Leave password blank.

fast user switching capability.

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and logging in from Welcome screen DOES not disable
the FAST USER SWITCHING compatibility. FUS is disabled only if you disable
the Welcome SCreen altogether.

In this case, you are not disabling the Welcome Screen, just using the
CTRL+ALT+DEL method temporarily.
