Help! I am new to Access and have spent the past week creating a rather difficult database for my new employer. Every time I would go into the database a security warning about unsafe expressions would pop up. I read somewhere online that you can control that through security. Well, i experimented with the security settings some, and now i can't get into the database at all! It asks for a password, but i never entered one, and no matter what it won't let me in. I keep getting a message that either the password is incorrect or that i don't have permission and says i need to contact the administrator, but i AM the admin. Is there anyway around this or to correct the problem?

First, Be sure to always have a backup copy of your DB.
After you have finished working on a task that is
particularly complex or whatever, copy your DB to a backup
location. Secondly, When it created the secured DB it
should have created 3 files; the secured DB, A "Secured"
DB which stores the usernames and passwords, and shortcut
file. You must use the shortcut to get into the secured
DB and if you never entered a password it will be a blank
password in there now. Also, the system is designed to
created a backup copy of the unsecured DB with a BAK
extension. change the extension back to mdb and open it
as a last resort. Hope this helps.

Thanks, AJ, that was a help. I now have the page that has all the usernames and passwords. I also have the shortcut and bak file. Howerver, those files also ask for a password, and none of the usernames and passwords on the security page help. Am I screwed?

Did you try the blank password with the administrator name?

Did you save the snapshot of the workgroup Admin file as
it was created (or print it out)? The user names and
passwords are on the original snapshot in which those
users were created.

If you don't have these, then yes you have lost your DB
most likely. However, these are relatively fool proof as
long as you have not changed the passwords since securing
the DB. If you need more help you can contact me directly

The bak file should be your unsecured database. You may be joined to your
secure mdw - that is why it's asking for username/password.

Use Start, Search and locate all *.mdw files on your computer.

Open Access, and go to Tools, Security, workgroup administrator and see what
mdw you are joined to.

You want to join the standard system.mdw that ships with Access.

Once you join it, then rename your bak file to have a mdb extension and
double-click it.
