Just finishing up a perfectly working DB and i wanted to apply adminstrative rights.I did it correctly to the point of having a shortcut on the desktop prompting for the password. It all worked well and prevented users rights as i had set it up.THEN CAME THE MISTAKE......I tried to winzip the program so i could transfer the DB through the internet and immediately after that,,all copies of access on my machine required a admin password. To make matters worse, i went to the shortcut and it read d:documents and settings shortcut secured.mdw could not be found.......hence, i can not sign into any access app on my machine....Can anyone help...what can be done to recover the shortcut or reverse what has happened. Please help!!!

You are joined by default to a workgroup that has a password set for the
Admin user (likely the mdw you secured your mdb with). Use the workgroup
administrator to see what you are joined to by default. In 97/2000 you
access the WA by Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe; in 2002 +, open Access and go to
Tools, Security, Workgroup Administrator. Try rejoining the standard
system.mdw (usually it's located in the windows system folder). That will
stop the login prompt for every Access session.
To make matters worse, i went to the shortcut and it read d:documents and
settings shortcut secured.mdw could not be found.......hence, i can not sign

Just right-click on the shortcut and choose properties. You'll see the
target that's being used. It is looking for your secured mdw on the D:
drive. If you have moved the mdw, then the shortcut needs to be editted to
reflect the new location. The target takes the format of
"path to msaccess.exe" "path to mdb" /wrkgrp "path to secure mdw"

Also when you ziped the mdb to transfer it via the internet, did you also
include the secured.mdw? You need that as well.

Thanks Joan, That did the trick.......i still have the shortcut on the desktop but ihave not clicked on it since i opened a duplicate copy of my DB before i started messing with Admin Rights. In reality, my needs for security are simple....only allow one person for data entry without viewing any of my designs and only allowing reporting for my manager and that is it in a nutshell.Do i have to go over the setup again with the wizard just to prevent two people from viewing or editing my design or should i prepare the DB for future users?Any advise for a new access user? Thanks for the help and support.

The security you've implemented will meet your needs. Why would you need to
run the wizard again?

You should split your database and put the backend on the server, as well as
the secured.mdw file. Give a copy of the frontend to each user on their
computer, and also a shortcut for them.

What specifically are you having problems with (and what version of Access)?

Hello,

I have version 2000 at work and practice at home with XP.I
saved the files on a flash drive last night and brought it
to work today.Unfortunately by me trying to learn, i
unchecked all my startup features so a form would appear
and i have the DB password prompt appear(not the admin
password).I have tried to hit shift open to bypass but the
DB window does not appear....what is the method to bring
back the DB window? Thanks for your help and support...

You don't just 'hit shift' to bypass the startup; you hold the shiftkey
down, and continue to hold it until the database is open. Also since you
have a database password set, you'd enter the password and hold the shiftkey
while you click on OK.

It is possible that the shiftkey was disabled, but from your description, I
doubt it since you would have done that, and you'd therefore know about it.

Thanks Joan,
You have the patience of a saint.
