locked out of windows

I have no idea what happened here. I turned my labtop off, left it for a
while turned it back on and all of a sudden it wanted a password to log on.
I've asked for it to require a password before. And not along did it require
a password for the owner but also for the guest! After a minute a box popped
up that said "the instruction at 0x76b2398c referenced memory at 0x00000000.
The memory could not be read."

Is there like a universal default password that the computer would use if
something like this occurs? Can anything be done or is it reformat time?
I'm using Windows XP Home by the way.
