We have 3 computers in a network, and trying to join an other machine running 2000 professionnal. This machine was stand-alone before my attepms to have it join the network. While trying to get this computer to be seen by the others on the network, last week I tried different options in the network configuration file. Not being succesfull, I was called to other tasks

The computer was shut-down for the week-end and now on start-up I get the following message
" Log on to windows

User name: Administrato
Password:

I never created a password as this machine was a stand alon

Using no password generates the message

The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type ypur password again. Letters in password must be typed...etc
.. ...I tried safe boot, last configuration etc . to no avail

Not being further alarmed by this, I decided to just re-install the original 2000 from the CD. Bad surprise,I cannot just reload windows as this Is a Toshiba laptop, and the re-install has the hard disk re-formatted ..

Most of my data is saved but I did not make a boot diskette..

The computer is still not seen by others..

Idea's to save all the re-install???

Thank

Pierre

I am a little confused: Are you asking how to overcome the
problem with your password, or are you asking how to
set up the machine so that it is visible to the other machines?

About passwords: You wrote "I never created a password
as this machine was a stand alone". I am afraid this is not
correct - the person who first loaded Win2000 on this machine
was asked to enter a password. It is not possible to avoid
this screen.

The standard way to reset administrator passwords is to
log on under an alternative admin account, then reset the
password to the primary account. If there is no altermative
admin account then you have to use third-party tools.
In summary:
- When first loading Win2000, always make a note of the
password you enter.
- Immediately create a second admin account. Not doing so
is asking for trouble.
- If the two previous steps were ignored, reset the password
with this boot disk:

Can you tell me if my dilemma has to be corrected with
the same third-party party tools.
Attempting to use a shared printer on a local area
network I changed the network configuration to one that
does not use domains. After rebooting, the user name and
password return the message "The system could not log you
on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then
type your password again." There is no way to specify a
domain. I do not know the administrator password. Is
there anyway to change it back to using domains so the
user name and password will work again? Or do I need to
logon as the administrator after reseting the password?
Any help is very appreciated.

Running piggy-back on an existing thread is not a good
idea - you should start a thread of your own.

If you disconnected your machine from the domain then
you have to ask your network administrator to re-register
your machine on the domain, or to give you a local
account/password.
