After format and reinstall, I did not even install modem, ethernet, or
anything, until it starting taking over, and within 7 minutes I was locked
out of windows completely! I went to many of the sites yall recommended, I
went to
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.esbot.removal.tool.html
that someone had suggested, and my problem is exactly the way it was
described. It uses winnit, system%, usersint.exe, etc. It is connecting
through the Remote Help and I can't turn it off, not even in MManager I don't
havve a burner on this pc, and no floppy on new. Any suggestions on the
first steps to take once I get into windows, how can it still be in there
after formatting drive? WOW it is a nast sucker. I would take it somewhere
but I'm still paying on the thing. Someone please, help me. I have been
fighting this thing for weeks now. Thanks all, Jana Thanks for all the good
advice below also, if I ever get back up it will help a ton. J

Start all over again.

Install a firewall, virus scanner, spy sweeper, etc before you even think of
making any kind of connection to the outside world.

Earlier this year "PC Magazine" ran a test and put a new, unprotected
computer online. It took less than 10 minutes for the system to become
totally infected.

A virus can remain on your drive if you just "format and reinstall" by
remaining in the boot sector. What you need is a low-level format of your
hard drive. You can usually get this tool for free by downloading it from
the hard drive manufacturer's web site. That's gonna be difficult without a
CD burner.

What a low-level format does is it reformats every single bit/byte on the
disk - thereby deleting the virus. Once this is done, you'll have to use
fdisk.exe (usually by booting from a floppy - a Win98 startup floppy will
work) to partition the drive, then you'll have to format it, then you can
start your reinstall.

Also, you can go to the link that you mentioned below and download the
removal tool. I'm not familiar with this tool, but it should eliminate this
infection (as long as this is what's wrong with your system). Still will
require a CD burner.

For the burner, I'd suggest that you check with friends, the library, and a
local school. You just might find a sympathetic ear. And, if you go
equipped with the correct URL's and a couple of CD's to write on, you're
likely to find someone to help you out.
