I have a Samsung 120Gig (1204H) HDD that was passed down to me from a
friend. It was locked with corrupt software and with an unknown user
and master password. Is there anyway to unlock this HDD? I don't want
to spend loads of money sending it to a data recovery firm because it'd
cost more then the hdd would cost. The data has no value so i wouldn't
care if it was lost. Can anyone help??

"passed down from a freind" =
Stolen by that friend and then he discoverd it was unusable?

What exactly do you mean by "corrupt software"? Have you read too
much cyberpunk?

Nope!!! It was NOT STOLEN!!!!!!!!!!!! He has the receipt for it.
Since he couldn't find a way to unlock it he figured it was unusable.
Since he knew that I was a Computer Engineer, he figured I could unlock
it!!! No, I haven't read too much cyberpunk. When I said corrupt
software, I'm talking about software that was poorly written. Hence,
when ever he used the software to lock the hdd, the x-box LOCKED.

Software that runs on a X-box that locks a disk is not "corrupt software",
it is software intentionally written to lock a disk. That's not something
that is likely to happen by accident. As a "computer engineer" you should
know this.

Whatever, it doesn't matter how it got locked it just matters that it
is locked. It could have been from either hardware or software
reasons. I was just told by my friend that he was locking the hard
drive with some version of Avalaunch (dashboard) when it froze up and
locked the drive with an unknown password.

Aha, I see. Now if there is a proof of purcase, you may get
the disk unlocked by a data recovery outfit. You need to ask
around. Rumour has it that some of them can unlock IBM disks.

I am not sure whether IBM themselves offer the service, but
have you asked there?

Wait a moment: "x-box"??? I think you can forget about getting this
recoverd. It wiuld at least be more expensive than a new drive.
