First off, I'm glad to hear you were able to recover your
files.
Now, to answer your question. As you saw in following the
procedure to recover your data, the first thing you have to do
is gain access to the Security page of the folder's Properties
sheet. In all versions of XP the Security page is, by default,
not displayed in Normal Mode. This is because what's called
Simple File Sharing is the standard means of governing access
to files and folders. Windows XP Professional and Media Center
Edition allow you to disable Simple File Sharing through the
Folder Options applet in Control Panel. Disable SFS and the
Security tab is available in Normal Mode.
With XP Home Edition, you can't disable SFS. You're only able
to access the folder's Security page in Safe Mode while logged
on with an account that is a Computer Administrator.
