Locked file

I have some locked files on my computer, and I am trying to understand the
purpose of why they are locked. Using the properties attribute of one of
the files, I see it is by Matrox Graphics, and it rests in the
WINNT\system32 and WINNT\system32\ReinstallBackups folders. Does it need to
be locked? How does one go about unlocking a file? I have a NEC monitor,
and an Intel graphics driver, so I'm not sure of this file's origin (it
carries a 1/2002 file date).

Thanks for any assistance.

What file? In the case of DLLs you'll need to unload them prior to
replacement, etc.

The specific file in question is MGABG.exe.

When using the Autoruns utility, it appears under the Services tab, but
there is no description. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for,
however.

Also Control Panel|Admin Tools|Services and stopping the service would
unlock the file.

I believe that all of the files shown in the Autoruns utility are active on
start-up. However, MGABG is the only one in the listing with a locked
symbol beside its title.

The reference that you cited is very useful. My thanks. Do you also
recommend that one utilize the "free" analysis of one's registry and driver
files for files that are out of date, or does that potentially lead to other
headaches (i.e., messing with the system)?

Again, my thanks for your rapid responses!

If you're not experiencing a specific problem then I guess I'd be inclined
to leave 'er be.
