Locked document, cannot modify?

I have Word 2003 (and Windows XP), and this evening when I called up a document to work on it, I discovered I couldn't do anything to it, not even copy the text and paste it somewhere else. Whenever I hit a letter or action key, a message is displayed down where the word and page count appears that says: This file cannot be modified, the document is locked. I did absolutely nothing to the document, so I have no idea how this happened or how to fix it.

Have you activated Word? (Help | Activate Product)

I haven't registered it yet, if that's what you mean. I guess I'll try registering it by phone and see if that helps.

Registering is not the same as activation. You don't have to register it in
order to be able to use it, but you do need to activate it to use it more
than 50 times. See “OFFXP: About Office Activation and Reduced
Functionality†at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293151
