locked by encryption

*****please, if you have any knowledge of how to solve
the following problem, please email me at the address
above ^ ....:
1.)win2k-adv-srv o/s loaded on hdd.
2.)virus infection forced a reload of same o/s on same
hdd.
3.)as new "administrator", attempted to open
previous "administrator" account, (which had been
slightly renamed), access is denied.
4.)key has been lost!
5.)very important financial and personal documents are
now unaccessable.
6.)HELP!

If your computer was the member of a domain, you may be able to use the
recovery agent for the domain to decrypt the files. If not and since it
sounds like you did not back up your EFS certificate/key, then your only
hope is if you still have a copy of your old user profile either still on
the hard drive if you did not format for renstall or in a backup somewhere.
If you do have a copy and know the user password then you could contact
Microsoft Support for a tool they have that could possibly help. It would
not be a free call [probably around $250]. If your files are not encrypted
which can be verified with the cipher tool or looking at the folder advanced
attributes, you may just need to take ownership of the files while loged on
as an administrator. --- Steve
