lock up

I have just recovered my computer from a pop-up ad crash.
OS is XP Home. Availability is 100%, Stability is 95%
estimated. The problem is it locks up when going
into "stand-by" mode. This occurs when the computer
is "Preparing to go into stand-by".The only way to
proceed is to turn it off by removing power. How do I
correct this lock-up condition?
