I am looking for information to repair a lockup problem.
It happens this way.

1) From start to my computer.
2) Go to change a setting.
3) system shows error screen right on change a setting,
or when I try to click on one of the options it goes to
error screen. "Explorer.exe has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
4) the system either locks and i have to shut down with
C/A/D. it then goes to desktop as if nothing has
happened.

1 out of 10 times it works properly to maybe change a
setting.

I have reinstalled windows, and have up to date virus
protection.

the error messages

app. name App. version mod. name mod ver.
Explorer.exe 6.0.2800.1100 Ntdll.dll 5.1.2600.1217

any suggestions on how to fix??

thanks

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

If your system is clear of viruses, assuming you have an XP CD and not a
recovery CD, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears,
select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download the this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.
