My pc (Toshiba pentium4 laptop, running xp home edition), has often "locked
up", when I am using internet explorer. It has never locked up when I am not
on line, although I am rarely off line. This was irritating, but I have lived
with it. However, recently it has turned itself off altogether when on line,
for no apparent reason. It starts up normally afterwards, although is
occasionally slow. Th pc is still under extended warranty, but that is not
much use if it is a software problem. If anyone can help I would be happy to
hear from you.

Have you defraged it lately ? My wifes did this about a year ago. Finally
had to replace the processor.
Have you ran any Ad or Spyware software to see if it had bugs ? If not,
get Microsofts new free version.

Yes, I defragged about 3 days ago and it has switched off once already since.
I have anti spyware (spyware doctor) and run f-secure 5.5 anti-virus, which I
believe to be good. I always presumed that the lock-up problem was a
conflict, maybe something to do with internet explorer as it only happened
when on-line, but the "switch off" problem appears to be something more
terminal. Fortunately, the pc is under an extended warranty, so if the
processor needs replacing at least it won't cost me.

I would send it back ASAP. I put up with it until my warranty was out. I
took it to two different placed for repairs before they figured it out.
You will proably get a replacement. What operating system are you running
?

Running one anti-spyware program is often not enough.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

If you think it is IE Go to Add/Remove Prog and select Remove for IE. You
should get a box to open and ask if you wont to Delet, rebuild, or Reload
IE.

If you are using Win XP. Go to Help and Support, select TOOLS, Advanced
System Information, View Error Log.
