Lock up of computer ongoing problem

I previously had Windows 98 on my PC. I installed Cox
cable for high speed Internet capability and thus had to
upgrade my Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Version. Every
since I did this upgrade and got my Internet service set
up, I have had a problem with my computer "freezing" up.
It is very, very frustrating because I cannot accomplish
any tasks because I have to keep manually turning off my
computer and rebooting. When I turn on my PC and before
windows XP starts, I get the following
message: "Checking file system on C: the type of file
system is FAT32, One of your disk needs to be checked for
consistency" and then the checking begins. Sometimes it
shows errors and sometimes it shows that files have been
recovered. I have a problem, once into Windows XP if I
am scrolling or if I sit idle too long, my PC "freezes"
and I have to reboot and go through the system checking
itself.

Does anyone have a fix for this? I have lost valuable
work time for the last week or so and I am very
frustrated and wish I had never upgraded to Windows XP!!
It has been a total nightmare. I have had the Cox
Internet checked and there is no problem there.

Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Also, do you think I should remove the XP and start all
over or is there something, you think, wrong with the
FAT32 files??????

Need a reply ASAP. Thanks.

Did you UPGRADE or perform a CLEAN INSTALL of XP? Sometimes upgrades do not
go well. If you can do a CLEAN INSTALL after backing up your data that you
need to a safe location.

I had the same problem, turns out that it may be the video
card that needs to be updated or just change it all
together.

I have windows 98 also. Cox cablemodem with the motorola surfbard. A
gateway computer. 450 Mhz pentium III. I keep the cookies and temp
file folder clean. Defrag very regulary. There are plenty of default
settings I have changed. One big one in my book is the port settings
in My Computer>Device Manager>Ports>Com 1>Properties. Then there
are the additions to the Windows 98 registry. I found them looking for
tips in google search engine. They are all in a site called
Winguides.com There are keys called MaxMTU, MaxMSS. Then there is
one called something like Receivewindowsize. They are not there. You
have to add them. If you are not familiar with registry editing it
has an option of letting it do it for you for a price. I have done
them manually. It is a complete world of difference! I have added a
ethernet card and lots of RAM to this machine. Another key that is
even on XP's is Menushowdelay. That one will really get your
attention. I have brought mine down to 1.
It really sounds crazy, but ADDING these keys really helps. I always
thought that adding keys would slow it down, but not so.
In this website it has stuff for 95's, 98's,ME's and XP's. It's like
releasing the machine within the machine. Power users really like it.
For dialup modems there is an advanced setting option that you can add
s11=38 to in the window that opens up. One for System board and
Memory optimizations too. It's for 95's and 98's. Hope this helps.
I have done these changes on several computers.
