Lock Button on Start Menu will not show Menu

When my new laptop arrived about six weeks ago, I had two buttons on the
Start menu. The red 'Shut Down' button & the 'Lock' button which in turn
displayed a menu giving various options such as Sleep, Shut Down, Log Off,
Restart etc. A couple of weeks ago, the 'Lock' button's menu disappeared, or
rather became so small that I have great difficulty in accessing it (you need
a magnifying glass to see it).

I have tried changing the various Power options in Control panel but nothing
I do will restore the status quo.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks - very helpful. Have copied the notes on the 'alternative solution'
to my hard drive and will read them at leisure and then, maybe use them. Will
also go back to your Blog from time to time to read more in depth.

Hi GeePee,

Are you sure that there are only two buttons? There should be three - the
two that you described and a third one of about 1/2 the size of the other two
which is a small right-pointing arrow. If you hover over this third button
you get the various shutdown options.

Exactly 'Dwarf' You are right there should be three. That's my problem, the
button with the > arrow on it appears missing - If I hove my mouse very
exactly over the R/H edge of the Start menu box where the button should be, I
can get that menu to appear. My problem is, how do I make it so I can see it?

I have a new Dell Vostro 1400 with Vista Basic and I'm having the same
problem with the arrow missing to the right of the lock button. Did
you ever get this fixed?

I have the exact same issue. Hopefully someone will give us the answer! My
computer's an HP Pavillion and I'm running Vista Home Premium/32 bit

This is my problem, too; I also have an HP Pavilion with Vista Ultimate on
it....
