Different components will have different serial numbers. If it's for
the "whole" collection of hardware, it's probably on the back panel or
on the motherboard (internal). On my laptop, it's on the bottom.
If it is a factory made computer, there should be a label on
the backplane or on the case. You can download the Bel Arc
Advisor program for free from www.belarc.com
and it will report details such as serial numbers and model
numbers.
The program AIDA32 will do the same and it reports a wider
range of details and it is also free from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
