Well, I guess I did not think that through...
If you use OpenVPN for example versus the MS PPTP VPN software you can
configure OpenVPN to either force all client traffic through the VPN tunnel
or not on the server side, ie. in the server config file.

If you choose not to force all client traffic through the tunnel, ie. the
default OpenVPN condition, you could print locally and access shared drives
on the remote LAN through the VPN tunnel.
Other VPN server/client software may provide the same flexibility. Others
can speak to that...
