As far as i know you need an update from Microsoft for all xp and problem
solved.

No, the OP doesn't need a patch. It would have been useful for him/her
to tell us what version of XP, but as a start:

To the OP - create identical user accounts and passwords on both
machines. If you wish to boot directly to the Desktop for convenience,
then this is done in Vista the same way as it is done in XP:

Start>Run [or click on Start Orb and type in the Search box] >control
userpasswords 2 [enter]

Uncheck "users must enter password", click Apply. You'll get a box where
you can specify which user should automatically log on. Put your user
account and password in there.

these paragraphs:
Start>Run [or click on Start Orb and type in the Search box] >control
userpasswords 2 [enter]

Uncheck "users must enter password", click Apply. You'll get a box where

1. Since you are using a crossover cable, assign static IP addresses. It
would be much simpler to use a router.

http://www.ezlan.net/direct.html - Peer-to-peer (crossover)

2. Check your firewalls. The error message you are getting can mean that
you have not properly configured your firewall to allow sharing.

For XP:

Run the Network Setup Wizard on all computers, making sure to enable
File & Printer Sharing, and reboot. The only "gotcha" is that this will
turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party
firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like
Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine. If you have
third-party firewall software, configure it to allow the Local Area
Network traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an
IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would
substitute your correct subnet.

For Vista:

File/Printer Sharing Vista -
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx

3. For automatic booting to the Desktop on either XP or Vista (if you
only have one person using the machine):

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm
