Hello,

I've been struggling for a while to be able to share files between my new
Vista (x64) desktop and my laptop. When I click "View full map" on the
Vista desktop, I do see the laptop (hurrah!) but it refuses to appear in the
Network and Sharing Center, or in any of the browsing lists when I try to
map a drive to a shared folder. (Right-clicking on the laptop icon in the
full map does nothing.)

Any suggestions on what I can do at this point?

Thanks,
Richard U.

Hi
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

It could be the firewall. Do you have 3rd party security software?

Kaspersky 7 on both, with the Windows firewall turned off. I also paused
Kaspersky on both to see if that would make any difference and it didn't.
Spybot on both, but not with teatimer.

I'll look through all those, but .. I've had a home network combining XP and
Win2000 set up for years using the same antivirus software (Kaspersky) and
it has worked fine, and it is just the introduction of Vista that has
knocked things out.

I did try pausing Kaspersky protection on both machines to see if that
helped, and it didn't.

I don't need the hotfix for XP, because the XP machine is showing up in the
network map. Something I read somewhere (I can't find it now) implied that
the problem might be with my router, and I need to map a virtual drive to
the name of laptop computer, bypassing something or other that is causing it
to fail to show up automatically. However, I don't recall the method for
doing that.

This is intensely frustrating!! I just rebooted both PCs, and now the Vista
PC is unable to create the full network map at all. It says "Windows cannot
create the network map. Responses from other devices on the network are
delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network." What now .. is
it really possible that my router isn't "Vista compatible?" It is D-Link
AirPlus Extreme G, model DI-624, made (of course) in China.

It could be computer browser issue too. Any system error if running net
view command?

No, no error. I ran it from a command box. It found the vista PC, the XP
laptop I've been working on, and my network printer. It didn't find another
XP desktop that I haven't yet tinkered with to expose it to Vista.
