I had a peer-to-peer network between two Window Xp home
with access to the internet via a router. System "A" can
not access the internet or network. System "B" can
access the internet directly or through the router.

Information about System "A"

- After connecting to the internet via modem... I
get "The page cannot be displayed" message in the
browser.

- When I attempt to repair my local area network
connection via the pull down menu, I get an error
message "The following steps of the repair operation
failed: Renewing the IP address"

- Looking at the event properties for source-Dhcp, the
message is "Your computer was unable to automatically
configure the IP parameters for the Network Card with the
network address..... The following error occurred during
configuration. An Address incompatible with the
requested protocol was used".

- Using ipconfig/all returns autoconfiguration IP address
169.254.237.76 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0

- TCP/IP driver is ok and network adapter is ok (verified
by ping 127.0.0.1 and ping name of local host

So what should I look at next to fix this problem ?

thank you in advance for your ideas...

You say they're connected to a router, and that the
ipconfig return is 169.x 169 is an address that microsoft
systems assign to themselves when they can't hit the DHCP
server, your router is likely a home network router that
also is a DHCP server. Check the cabling, the fact that
you ping 127.x means that TCP/IP is properly config'd. In
other words that ping request never leaves the NIC.

Currently I can not connect to anything ! That is my
problem. The information provided was with a cable
connected to the LAN card and router. The cable was good
yesterday when I tested it but I will find another one
and make sure. I also did ipconfig /renew and the
results: an error while renewing intereface local area
connection 3. An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket... I believe this is one of the test
done by repair...

I have been having a similar problem. I have two
computers running XP home. They are networked together
through a switch and one of them acts as a server/router
and connects directly to a DSL line. The other day I
couldn't get to the internet or do anything involving a
network from the other one. I can't ping between the
computers, but on both I could ping 127.0.0.1. Its like
they just can't see eachother anymore. I have re-
configured the network I don't know how many times. I
even re-installed XP on one of the computers. I checked
all the cables and everything. could it be a problem with
Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Katie
