All of a sudden I have a problem in that explorer will not open my LOCAL
DRIVE C:. It brings up the block to choose a program assosiated with the
request. I do not have the same problem with any other drive like Drive D,
CD Rom, DVD or Removable Drive. They all open without a problem.

I can choose explorer to open the drive manually by browsing to it, but once
I have it selected, I can not set it to open like that every time as the
block is grayed out. I have run a number of virus scanners and there is no
problem.

Somebody suggested that I remove autorun.inf in the root directory, which I
did, but it did not change anything. Can anybody help.

Anytime a box or setting in windows gets greyed out,its usually because
the ability of the OS is ok to do so,but youre settings are not in check to
do that.
Maybe try in safe-mode,or try other possibilities then open event viewer &
get specific details.

Appears to be that you have an Autorun.inf file on the root of your C Drive.

1. Open My Computer - right-click on C Drive and choose Open or use the
manual method you describe to open the C drive.
2. Click Tools - Folder Options
3. Click View tab and click on "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
4. Also uncheck the option "Hide Protected operating systems files
(Recommanded)".
5. Now, you may see an Autorun.inf file on the root of your C drive. Select
the file and delete it.
6. Restart your PC.
7. Later, change the Folder View settings to Default.

Hope this help, let us know!

You are 100% correct with the autorun.inf file, but it can not be removed as
per your suggestion, as it was a virus/spyware.

I tried 5 different virus/spyware scanners and nothing was detected, till I
used NOD32, which found AVPO.exe or Win32/Pacex.gen virus. Google show that
it will cause exactly the symptoms that I had.

Surprising though that 5 scanners showed nothing including Spyware Doctor
from PCTools.

Thanks for the help.

Try this:

http://technize.com/2007/07/24/how-to-manually-remove-viruses-from-your-system/

This page will give you what you want. Download the Powerexes.exe file. It
has 2 programs within. Process Explorer and AutoRuns.

The Process Explorer will help you find you unwanted, unknown and
suspicious process that are running in the background and donot let you
delete the Autorun.inf file.

The Autorun will help you to remove those processes from startup so the next
time you reboot your machine they will not execute again.

The details are given on the site.

Hope this help, let us know!
