I usually give as the local domain name such as mydomainlocal.com or
mydomain.local. We're always working within Active Directory and
Windows 2000/2003

However, a friend of me is asking me why he can't simply use mydomain
without any further extension.

Quite frankly, I don't know what to say.

Thank you

Hi Thomas, point your friend to the article below. It should be able to
answer that question. Technically he CAN use a single label domain name but
all it's going to do is cause more work and headaches, combined with the
possibility of a domain rebuild somewhere down the road.

300684 - Information about configuring Windows for domains with single-label
DNS names (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300684).

To touch base on the name, DNS follows a hierarchal tree. So in "domain.com"
the top of the tree is a DOT, then the first level below that is the "com",
the second level below that is "domain".

Now if you have just "domain", then DNS barks at it, since there is no
hierarchy and it doesn't know what to do with it so it starts SHOUTING at
the Internet ISC Root servers, "Help Me! I have a name here and don't know
what to do with it!!!", and therefore it causes unecessary traffic to the
Roots.

That's just part of it. GPOs and other errors come up. I can go on, but I
hope that was enough...
