Hello,

I've built a new PC and have just finished installing XP on it.
For some reason it has named the local disk E: instead of C:
I've been looking online and it looks as though i'm going to have to
reinstall. It seems you can't change the name of the disk you boot off.

What I want to know is how can i ensure this isn't going to happen again?
Was there a setting i missed in the installation that allows you to name the
drive?

That happened because you had external drives attached. Unhook them and
then do your install.

How many partitions did the disk have on it ?

My guess would be, that some partition was "ahead" of the one you're
installing on. You have to think about how the installer might enumerate
all the volumes on the computer, and then it may become clear why the
letter used was E: .

Re-install with one unused partition on a local drive.
This means that
1) unplug all external drives,
2) remove all internal drives other than the one you want installation
resides,
3) for all the used local partitions, hide them with a utilty like
Partition Magic.

Correct.

Already answered by others.

One question that you need to ask yourself: does it really matter? It
depends on you, but XP will operate perfectly satisfactorily from drive E:
Rename the drive something obvios such as 'XP System' and that will catch
your attention more than 'E'.
