On a windows 2000 pro, while computer was still joined to the domain, I logged in as administrator on the domain to change the computer name. On previous PC's if I just try to change the computer name it won't allow me to do it. So what I did was, in the properties I changed the computer name and the domain to workgroup at the same time, rebooted and now I am locked out. I did the original installation and set the local admin password to be identical to the network admin password.

Out of 50 stations I have done, this has happend twice already. I am the administrator for this local computer and I have the local and domain password to try and join it back. Is it possible the local admin password can get corrupted or deleted when changing the computer name and the domain to workgroup at the same time? ??? Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance for your time.

it sounds like if you do not know the admin password that
you will be rebuilding the OS on that system. I would
suggest in the future to disjoin the domain first(join a
workgroup), reboot and then change the computer name,
reboot and then rejoin the domain with the new computer
name.

That's the problem. I do know the Local admin password. Unless someone has experienced this or if it is a know problem, I will most likely have to re-format. Thank you for your time and your response

Cheers.

I have experienced this as well, and never found out why.

Being an admin as well, there are many tools you should have. The tool
here:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

will help you re-gain access to this computer. Apparently M$ security
really is a joke. It is very easy to use. If Win2000 was installed to the
default directory, all you do is hit a bunch of return's (accept the
default's) until you get to the point where it shows you all the
username's.

Read the instructions carefully. I have used this, for legitimate
purposes only, better than a dozen times, successfully, in NT4, Win2K Pro
& Advanced Server. I haven't had to try this with XP yet.

Best of Luck,

DS
