loading Win 98

I just built up a PC for a friend and I having issues loading Win 98SE.

I keep on getting this message below:

CDR 101: Not reading Drive E (I have tried 2 different roms now and I am
getting the same thing) The PC is not seeing my drives.

I already put a post up about this but I am desperate and I also tried 2
other Windows boot up disks from the web site someone told me about in my
other post..but to no avail.

Could this be a mobo issue with a jumper somewhere?

i think I figured out the issue.

I think it helps if I format the hard drive first, right??

would this be it? Well it is formatting right now.

Could be. How do you have the hard drives and cdrom jumpered? What
cables and controllers are they on?
 
i think I needed to format the hard drive first. I guess we'll see

I bought the mobo with no instructions jumpers

You need to have the drive/cdrom properly connected, physically and
electrically, before you should attempt to format the hard drive.

How many hard drives to you have, and how many optical drives?

Are your EIDE cables marked with the words "Master" or "Slave" next to
the connectors?

The jumpering is pretty standard, the mobo manual might not even mention it.

well the h/d if formatted now

just 1 hard drive

hard drive is off the masters primary

and the Rom is off the masters secondary

It depends on some other things, but it could possibly cause a problem.

This configuration sounds correct:

Primary Controller: 1 Hard Drive set to "master"

Secondary Controller: 1 Optical Drive set to "master"

If you have "selecting cables" -- the are usually stamped with the words
"Master" or "Slave" next to the connectors -- you could set the drive
that uses it to "Cable Select," as long as you have it plugged into the
right connector.

Most drives have a "cable select" setting on their jumpers. If you use
those settings, you have to have a cable that will determine which drive
is the master and which is the slave. You can often tell if you have
one of those cables because "Master" and/or "Slave" is stamped right on
the cable, next to the connector.
 
What's wrong with setting the BIOS to boot directly off the Windows 98 SE
Installation CDROM? Unless its ancient hardware you have there which doesn't
support a bootable CDROM, this is the easiest way to go about it. Do you
know how to do this/have you tried?

Sounds like you are going to need to do some detective work. You need to
eliminate all the possible "suspects" one at a time until you arrive at the
culprit. The usual suspects (in no particular order):
Incorrect BIOS setting.
Defective secondary IDE connection on the motherboard.
Wrong jumper for secondary IDE (if applicable).
Incorrect IDE cable attachment to secondary IDE (pin 1 in wrong orientation)
Incorrect IDE cable attachment to CD drive (pin 1 in wrong orientation)
Bad IDE cable.
CD drive jumpered wrong.
CD drive defective. Check this out:

No it will not make a difference whether the HDD is
formatted, the other drives will show up and work (or not,
in this case) either way.
