I will be loading Vista home premium when it is released and have been
running on Vista RC2 build 5744 since it was released. My question is how to
keep my settings and added programs and e-mail when I do the new install.
Any and all help will be appreciated.
Mike

Hi Mike,

Basically, you can't. The RC versions are of Ultimate. To use Home Premium
will require a clean install. You can try using the the migration tool, but
I can tell you that it did not work for me when I went from RC2 to a clean
install of Ultimate RTM.

If you are using Ultimate as most are unless you elected to install another
version and skip the PK, you will have to do a custom install and the best
way to transfer is to use Windows Easy Transfer, and when Vista is released,
it has been stated here that a program will be available to transfer
installed programs also. Colin will probably clarify

Thanks All
The Link provided is what I believe I need to migrate my to Vista Home
Premium

It is called Windows Easy Transfer Companion and the beta will be available
for download around the time of Launch. However, it will not help the OP.

Unlike WET, the WET Companion beta does not support intermediate storage so
it only works between two physical machines connected with the special cable
or an infrastructure network. The wizard has to be running on both machines
at the same time. That means it cannot move apps between volumes on the
same computer.

It is specifically designed to be used for moving apps between your old XP
machine and your new machine that you just bought with Vista preinstalled.
It would work if you installed Vista yourself, but the design is based on
the idea that you just got yourself a whole new computer and now you want to
move your apps over before you dump the old machine.

Future iterations of the WET Companion may support intermediate storage.

No, the reference is to a new tool that transfers apps and not just files
and settings. It is branded as the Windows Easy Transfer Companion. It is
a live transfer program only at this time. The beta should be offered for
download at the time of Vista launch.

Since Colin says the new program will only transfer 'live' between machines,
you will probably have to install your programs unless you can move the RC2
drive to another machine to do the transfer. Even that may not work as
Colin didn't specify whether it will only transfer from XP or includes
Vista. The scenario he mentions would be most useful from XP to Vista as
very few would be transferring from Vista to new machine Vista at this time.

I don't see why it wouldn't work fine in a Vista to Vista scenario.

There will be two versions of the Companion: x86 and x64. You can run the
x86 version on one machine while running the x64 version on the other. It
is necessary to run the correct version so that 32 bit apps get installed
into Program Files (x86) in Vista x64 and native 64bit apps get installed in
Program Files or not transferred at all according to the transfer
configuration.

Didn't know that, thanks. How does it differ from USMT?

It is not a replacement for USMT or WET. It only transfers apps. You need
WET and WET Companion to transfer everything. Logically, there will only be
a WET that transfers everything one day, but not yet.
