I don't always get the option of browsing to select the drive i prefer to load onto when installing a disk, how can i save disk space on the default drive & load onto the alternative drive?
Load what on to? How about telling us what you are trying to install and
why a default installation will not work for you?

In general programs display the default installation folder and give you the
option to change that.

how can i decide which drive i wish to load onto?

One general, unless you have a very good (and unusual) reason to do
otherwise, software should be installed on the same drive as Windows
is, usually C:.

One good reason for doing otherwise is that you are running out of
room on C:. Unless that's the case, the are very few good reasons to
do anything else.
