I want to load sp2 for win XP and SP4 for Win 2K thru a Global Policy. My
question is...If I configure both SP's in the Computer\software portion of
my policy, will it automatically install the XP service pack on XP machine
and ignore the 2K service pack? Or will there be adverse affects from doing
this.

I could put all XP machines in one OU and all 2K machine in another, but I'd
rather do it the way mentioned above if possible.

thanks,
Kevin

You can create two Policies for one OU, create a W2K group (add the W2K
computers to this group), create an XP group (add the XP computers to this
group) then filter each policy by either of these groups.

I prefer this method because then I can control what software gets loaded on
each type of OS eg admin tools etc.

It worked. thanks a lot!

Kevin,

Filtering is simply replacing "Authenticated Users" -
which has both read and apply policy permissions - with
another Security Group. So, as Brendon suggested, create
the W2K Security Group and place all of the WIN2000
machine accounts in that Security Group and create the WXP
Security Group and place all of the WINXP Pro machine
accounts in it and then remove the Authenticated Users
group from the Securit on the Policy and add both of the
groups that you created. Do not forget to give both of
them BOTH the read and apply policy permissions.

Actually, my definition of "filtering" was poor. I was
applying it to your situation.

HTH,

Cary
