aloha PChuck,
Sorry for the confusion between inclair & myself.
I'll attempt to recap so you can get a better idea of what I'm facing.
1) My configuration on the network is 2 computers both with xp-sp2, computer
A with Home, Computer B with Pro.
2) The gateway is a linksys WRT55AG set up wired only.
3) Both computers use zone alarm firewall and anti-virus.
4) both computers see each other on the network and computer A has access to
computer B resources. Computer B does not have access to computer A
resources.
5) both com-puters can ping each other.
6) zone alarm was bypassed without any change in results.
7) I've changed the internet connection settings on the TCP/IP advanced WNS
tab to "Enable netBIOS over TCP/IP"
8) I've downloaded the browser status tool from "dynawell" and placed it on
C:\documents and settings\don\utility libraries.
9) the cmd line sends back an error that "utility is not a recognized
internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

o.k. you're caught up. Where do I go from here???

Aloha Don,

Thanks for the recap, it's better than having to fish out the old thread.

To get browstat to run, you either add "C:\documents and settings\don\utility"
to the Path, or you run it as "C:\documents and settings\don\utility\browstat
status". If both computers see each other, then the Browser isn't the prime
suspect here.

If you have NetBT Enabled, then you need to check Zone Alarm. Check the
firewall, and check for an anti-worm component. The SMBs that transport file
sharing are being blocked.

Or maybe you need to get authentication working. Check the Guest account on
Computer A, and make sure that it's activated for network access.

Your comments on the utility path helped tremendously. both computers
opened the browser status and then asked me for commands that I could not
understand. II would appreciate further clarification of what I'm supposed
to see or commands to engage.
Your comment about zone alarm firewall was also helpful, I found that it
blocks NetBIOS automatically. Now i"m in a za forum to find help in
overriding that setting. However, I disabled za firewall and tried again to
no avail.
Your comment about checking the guest account has me stumped. Plz explain
what I should do. When I enter control panel, user groups, I don't have any
options for checking the settings for that user choice. I'm further confused
by the need to check the Guest user profile when I sign on to both machines
as the administrator. Hence another question. Does the same settings apply
to the administrator user???
Thanks for all your patience with me...I know just enough to get me into
trouble but not out of trouble.

Trouble, Don, is not what you get into or out of. It's what you try to avoid in
general. Zone Alarm firewall is trouble, here. Disabling it isn't always the
best solution either.

Computer A, with XP Home and Simple File Sharing, will only use Guest
authentication for network access. Computer B, with XP Pro, CAN run Advanced
File Sharing and provide non-Guest network access. I recommend that you balance
the two, though, and use Simple File Sharing if you're going to use XP Home on
the same network.

You don't enable Guest network access through Control Panel. That's local
access.

It has taken me a long time to read the links you gave me in reply to my
questions and to execute the instructions. However I believe I have done
them all successfully. Here's another recap:
1) after installing browstat I'm convinced both computers see each other.
2) I downloaded ntrights and enabled guest networking through the command
line.
3) I synchronized the simple file sharing between both XP-home & XP-pro.
4) I uninstalled zone alarm.
5) I ran another attempt to access computer A's resources from Computer B,
and received the dreaded "access denied" msg.

I anxiously await your next set of suggested remedies.

If you're using Simple File Sharing on both computers, is Guest ACTIVATED for
network access, on both computers?

And check restrictanonymous too, on both computers.

Then the best step next is for you to share the logs - "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
