HELP!
My old laptop was destroyed. I have 5 back-up discs of all the files that
were on the laptop. I now have a new laptop. I cannot figure out how to
import the appropriate files to populate outlook contacts (BTW went from XP
to Vista)

Importing is never the way to transfer data. Just open the PST file that
contains your data in Outlook.

I will try your suggestion. Thank you. Considering my challenge, I may have
to get back to you:)

Here is more information if you do:
The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the
mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:

when i try to import the .pst, the dialog box says: can't import to
duplicate folders.

here's what i did:
1) from outlook contacts: FILE...IMPORT and EXPORT...next
2) selected: action: import from another program or file...next
3) selected: personal folder file (.pst)...next
4) had to browse to find my .pst file. (there is a folder on my desktop
that contains all the files that were back-up from my old laptop....desktop
name>backup>documents and settings>desktop name>local settings>application
data>(Microsoft)>......OPTIOS: Allow duplicates to be created.
5) here's trouble: Select folder to import from...selected PERSONAL FOLDERS
checked: include subfolders
import items to the same folder in: selected PERSONAL FOLDERS (also tried
just CONTACTS)
6. FINISH

RESULTS: The source and destination folders for this operation cannot be the
same.

:( HELP! (please)

Indeed. If you'll recall, I already told you that importing is never the
correct way to transfer Outlook data. Now you see why. Can you read and
follow the instructions I posted instead?

Now you're getting more and more lost. WAB files are not even used by
Outlook. Those are Outlook Express files.
Are you even using Outlook?

I understand what you were saying about the .pst files. The ones I can find
in the backup folder will not import as per my prior cunumdrom:(

I mentioned the WAB files, because it appears to be a pretty big
file...located in:

desktop name>backup>application data>microsoft>address book...

I tried your initial post instructions, but did not get anywhere. I will
try again....80th time the charm. Thank you for your help and patience.

THE CONTACTS HAVE APPEARED!!!!!!

I had to do a bit of workaround. WHen I tried to OPEN the .pst file while
it was in my backup folder, I would get a message...NO file found.

SO..I separately went into the folder, moved the appropriate files to the
DESKTOP. Then, went back into Outlook, following your instructions, OPENED
the file from its new location and VOILA!

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

You're welcome, I think. I think you may still be confused, however, because
your descriptions are not consistent with reality. If, in fact, your old
data was in Outlook Express, then there is no way you could have imported it
directly into Outlook. OE does not use PST files. It uses a WAB file for
Contacts and other files for messages. You could only import that data into
OE, not Outlook. Only then could you import directly from OE into Outlook,
and that is the only way to transfer data from OE to Outlook.
