lmhosts file not loading

I am trying to use the lmhosts file to associate an IP
address with my company mailbox but the file does not
appear to load.
I have tried using the command "nbtstat -R" to manually
load the file and then nbtstat -c to check the status and
the association doesn't appear to have been loaded.
Pinging the name confirms this with an error
message "unknown host being generated" (pinging the actual
IP address does work). I have checked that the lmhost file
is in the correct location (c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc)
and also that it does not have a file extension. In
addition I have added 4 x carriage returns to the end of
the file.
The file itself is in the format:-

123.456.789.012 hostname

Has anybody got any ideas?

That looks more like what you'd put in a hosts file, not lmhosts. If you
don't have a domain, you may not need lmhosts anyway - if you're just trying
to map a host to an IP. Hosts should do it. Not sure what you mean by
"company mailbox" - what are you actually trying to access?

In your TCP/IP properties, advanced, WINS, make sure "enable lmhosts lookup"
is enabled.

.In Outlook my Exchange server has a name ssigned that
exists on a company server. WHen I am connected to the
company Network this all works correctly and also when I
make a dial up connection or connect to the a VPN. The
problem I have is when using Broadband and not connected
to te VPN the host name cannot be resolved. The Lmhost
file I am using is a copy of one that is being used by
other colleagues using the same type of connection.

Did you check to make sure LMHOSTS lookup is enabled in your TCP/IP
properties?
How are you connecting to Exchange without VPN? Are you using RCP over
HTTP(s) with OL2003 on Windows XP SP1 (works only with Exchange2003)?

I'd sure hope your network admins weren't just working without a good
firewall or opening up the ports in a firewall to allow "bareback" access -
this is a big no-no and allows you to have all sorts of uninvited guests on
your network.

For help with LMHOSTS files, see
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;180094.

Note - the padding spaces for the domain name (0x1b) entry are very
important - be sure not to miscount!

For more info, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;150800

I always use the #PRE flag on LMHOSTS lines, which preloads the entry into
the table on boot. Don't forget to reboot the PC after making changes to the
LMHOSTS file.

I have tried all the same stuff and both my hosts and lmhosts file ar
not loading.

Please help!

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Thank

Hi - what is "the same stuff" ? You haven't quoted another message in here
so nobody is likely to know what you've tried. Or what your symptoms are.
Please repost with more detail and perhaps someone can help.

ok- my host and lmhost file have no effect on the system. I hav
verified that there are no extentions on the files. Lmhosts look up i
enabled. netbios over tcpip is enabled.

nbtstat -R followed by nbtstat -c shows no names in list eventhoug
there are names in the lmhosts file and the hosts file
