Hi all,

Just a quickie...

I have an hosts file on my server which I've added I've added my routers IP
to against the name 'router' etc, so that I dont have to try and remember
the IP all the time - this works fine.

It occurred to me that it would be handy to abbreviate some of the
developments I'm working on also - so that I couldnt enter a short name to
take me directory to the directory that I'm working on...example

127.0.01 localhost
127.0.01/developmentname developmentname

But it doesnt seem to work? Can you not specify the virtual directories
after the name server IP in this file?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Rob

Hi Rob,

No, the LMHOSTS file is used to resolve NetBIOS computer names to IP
addresses. You cannot use it to resolve virtual directories.

Thanks to both Marc and Joe for your respective replies - pity though -
would have been handy :o) Anyone know any work arounds?

Also - since I've been using W2k3 - I've noticed that when I opening my
development home page (by just going to my IP address) - frontpage now takes
longer to open it - I believe its actually going 'outside' of my network and
then back in again - whereas previously (W2k) it was like lightning and just
opened it immediately - presumably opening it locally...

Any thoughts to perhaps why this might happen?

I can obviously get the same results using 'localhost' - but was just
curious...

Cheers

Rob

It shouldn't go outside of your network unless you are using an IP address that is not on the local network (as defined
by the subnet masking not physical connections) for your site and the IP stack sends the packet to the router.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply. The IP is that of the ISP's WAN which comes into my
router....its just odd that this is how I always used to browse to my
development work, and then simply opened it in Frontpage for example using
the edit icon on the toolbar, was always nice and speedy - since 2003 its
certainly not speedy!

I think I would break out a network monitor and watch the actual traffic to see what is going on.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply.

How do I got about doing one of those then? And what should I be looking
for?

Any help appreciated.

You should be able to go into add/remove windows components and add netmon there. What you should look for could vary
but I would start by watching the name res calls.
