Live Mail

Hi, Rich.

I like Windows Live Mail better than Windows Mail, too. ;<)

For others who want to try it, go to:
Windows Live Mail Beta
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

A few things to note:

1. The name is "Windows Live Mail", often referred to as "WLM". It is
still in public beta. It is available to the public, but it is still in
development. Use it, but use it cautiously. The latest build available now
is 12.0.1184.

2. Several confusingly-similar program names were changed at the end of
May. Most notably, the word "desktop" was deleted from the name. (Some
users still have the final build (8.0.1226) of "Windows Live Mail desktop"
beta, but the new WLM build is a substantial improvement over WLMd.)

3. Even though the the word "desktop" was retired at the end of May, it
still appears in the name of that URL.

4. Peer-to-peer support for WLM is in the newsgroup (Community) that also
still includes "desktop" in its name:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

5. Windows Mail is bundled into Vista, so it will continue to be included
with all new Vista packages, both retail and OEM, for the indefinite future.
Every DVD-ROM that has already been produced has the original WM on it, so
WM won't disappear for a very long time.

6. WM and WLM can be run side by side, and we can actually run both at the
same time, but that is probably NOT a good idea. I'm not ready to let them
share a single database. When WLM installs, WM's icons and menu listings
may disappear, but WM is still intact on the hard drive.

7. WLM still needs a LOT of work, mostly on its User Interface, although
its basic functions work very well almost all the time. The final release
of the finished product is probably still months away, but I prefer it to
WM, even at this beta stage.

I've never used Hotmail or Messenger or IMAP, so I can't comment on how WLM
relates to those. I've used Outlook Express and its successors since the
1990s, but have used Outlook very little. I used many browsers and
newsreaders in the 1990s, but settled on IE and OE and have not even looked
at Firefox, Thunderbird, etc., so I can't comment on them, either.
