Why must I create a Live account when I have no interest is playing Halo 2
(for PC) online? You can't opt out. You are forced to create a Live
account before you can start running the game. That sucks. Did I miss some
way to install Halo 2 without having to sign up for a Live account?

Weird, I thought you could just create a profile, but not a live account.

It's even worse with Gears of War. You can play without an account but you
can't save your progress unless you create a Live! accounts.
What a BS way to to build a mailing list.

MS is about to LIVE! account them self off my buy list.

It actually has to do with where the achievements are stored, along with
being able to play with others Live. If you don't want to sign up, that's
your choice, but Xbox Live (the same mechanism as Windows Live) has just
passed five years of providing pretty good community participation among
people all over the world.

Hang on a minute, I remember now, I played Halo 2 with an offline account
which was entirely local. Because back when I got Halo 2 live was down, and
so I created an offline account.

This works no different than a profile in many PC games. The option is
there at least to do single player.
