I recently did a fresh install of winxp on my p4p800+2.2gig p4.. and here
is the problem I have after installing all critical updates and service
pack#1...

under device manager, I see two things as not working properly (yellow
question marks):
1 - SM bus controller
2 - universal serial bus controller

whether the next problem is connected to the one above or not, I am not sure
but here it is anyway:

on my previous installation of winxp, I really liked the fact that after
going into standby mode, the computer would just nicely return to last state
after I pressed power button again, and within just 5 seconds... well, it
doesn't do it now anymore... instead, it seems to go into standby, and when
I bring it back with power button, it gives me a weird message "hard
error".. I think it's even missign the word "disk" in the middle.. so there,
the error message has an error in it too :) anyway, I that point all I can
do is restart the computer.

if anyone can help, please do. by the way, I have never up to this point
used the original CD that came with my p4p800 board. so I'm still not sure
if I should have done it.. maybe thats the fix.

thanks!

hi- xtz

On my two P4P800 Deluxe mobos I'll had trouble too with the USB
controller... I'll download patches and last updated versions *.INF and USB
files for Windows 2000 from Intel Web Site... as well as 3COM LAN driver v.
10.0.46 downloading from either 3COM and/or ASUS...

Updating vith new Versions, and/or patches should solve your problems. OTOH
it's s.t. difficult to known which one is the best download to use... the
last one is not always the good one.

You need to feed the intel inf update first to your computer before
feeding any other drivers and/or updates. This way all of your
hardware will be detected right.
Usually you still can do use the infupdate right now. It's on the CD
although a more recent one is on the web (ASUS/INTEL)

on intel website, it says that there is no need to install the drivers if
you installed the ms service pack #1. cause they are included in it.

is there a specific link where I can find them? could this usb driver
problem be related to the fact that I cannot return from standby mode in
xp?

thanks!

Install the INF, it's required. I'm amazed your system even works
without it. It's on Asus CD, Asus website, Intel website...

well, turns out I was able to install the universal bus drivers just by
connecting to the internet and doing an automatic serch... but the SM bus
controller is still not active in the device manager.. what exactly is this
for?

I downloaded some intel drivers from here:
it seemed to install them but I am still having the problem with this device
in device manager.. sm bus controller. thanks!
here is the link I downloaed from:

okay.. I'll look on the asus CD... like I said, the univeral bus device
seems okay now, but the SM bus is still not working.. what is SM bus
controller anyway?
