I had a recent problem when I tried to copy a DVD I burned on a ILO
DVDR05 recorder onto my hard drive of my computer. My CDC-ROM drive
will now not read any type of DVD? And Windows explorer does not read
them at all either? Seems like some how the firm ware could have been
damaged? Possible ? Is it possible that this process affected the firm
ware of my lite on disc drive? I read on CD Freaks about a guy who had
a drive workign fine and then played a newly bought video game and had
similar problems? Any advice?

CD-ROM drives cannot read DVD's!
Your Lite On is a DVD drive.
And Windows explorer does not read
them at all either?

Are you 100% confident it is not just a corrupt disk?

Highly doubtful.

It is impossible to give advice as your post dosen't detail what steps
you've taken, nor exactly what is or isn't functioning?
Is it detailed as OK in Device Manager?

If you want to perform a firmware upgrade:
http://tinyurl.com/nfu7l

(Though the proviso being the oblique symtoms you detail
do *Not* indicate a firmware issue.)

Go to google.com/search,type:litonit You'll find in results, lite on
it-downloads,
firmware,etc Go to thier site,locate firmware,locate youre unit,download the
latest firmware from them...

Thank you for your reply. Let me provide some additional detail:
1. The drive is 3 years old but not heavily used. When used it was to
watch pre-recorded movies.
2. It started to act up right after I put the DVD that I recorded on
an ILO machine into the drive. I was trying to transfer a TV show to my
hard drive at the time and it failed to copy. In reading furhter ILO
has some security features on their disk. The ILO disk played teh show
fine I had problems when I tried to copy.
3. My computer no longer recognizes ANY DVD disk at all in the drive.
In explorer, in Power DVD or Windows Media Player it says "Insert a
Disk into Drive D" It seems the drive cannot read DVD's any more.
4. Device manager says the system is working ok - on issues at all.

Can you give me any advice? Is it possible to work with CD but not
DVD? Any way to test it? I really appreciate any advice you can give
me.
4. It reads CD ok but sometimes slow.
5. I cleaned the laser with a can of compressed air and an alcohol swab
- no difference.
6. I tried several older restore points and none helped at all. Same
result
7. When I put a DVD in the drive it seems to be trying to start up but
the spped sounds highly variable and it never really gains much speed.
8. I have deleted the drive in the system utility and let XP re-load
it . Same result.

Hi,
You have nothing to lose by trying a firmware upgrade -
This link is to latest firmware for that specific drive:
http://tinyurl.com/nfu7l

Though I suspect your drive is knackered and needs replacing.
Let us know if the firmware upgrade cure's the prob.

Thanks I'll give it a try but I tried the link for the firmware and it
said error - page not found. Also can you tell me exactly how to
update? Just open the download and tell it to go to my "D" drive?

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi
I'll find and re-post the link.

Updating the firmware:
This involves fundemental changes to the basic's of the drive.
OEM's - Depending on whose definitions you rely, means:
Original Electronic's manufacturer...OR, Original Equipment manufacturer.
Anywayz, they spend an awful lot of time in R+D of their product,
and subsequently an awful amount of time in keeping their kit uptodate!
Firmware usually only involves installing "new definitions" of perpertually
newly released and configured blank media, but also *fixes* for operating
system and compatibilty issues with other hardware, as it becomes known.
Installing firmware is straightforward and should meet a "set criteria".
A) Firmware upgrades are nearly almost always a "zipped" file.
B) When "unzipped" it should create, and unpack the contents to a
specific and named folder.
C) Again, *almost* certainly within the folder will be a text doc that
details installation instructions.
D) Installation is *usually* instigated via a tool, which will be within
the newly created folder - it will be an executable, and invariably
it will be entitled something obvious, such "install.exe"/"update.exe"
etc
Exact details will be in the text doc.
E) After reading the installation instructions, it will normally just
involve
clicking on the tool executable, and subsequently a series of prompts
will appear onscreen, just follow the onscreen prompts, clicking
as appropriate.
F) The installation tool, once executed - will locate the required files
from
the created folder - so do NOT move nor delete anything from such a
folder - this I strictly forbid.
G) This point is acadamic in your circumstances, but for anyone else reading
...........Updating firmware is irreversiable, and if performed
incorrectly
could render the specific drive totally unuseable.
H) Only update with firmware designed for your specific drive.

I) "unzipping" (and creating a folder for) the firmware.
I cannot imagine a PC in this day and age not being equipped with
such a utility, but if in your instance such a utility is not
installed,
the download site for the firmware will also include a download for
such an "unpacking" application.

You were right! The Hewlard Pack' site that I originally posted a link to,-
that had the firmware update (Because they used to install that drive on
their specific models) well they have now deleted it?
Further investigation reveals that the most uptodate version is dated
back in May 2004, this reveals it to be an ancient device that seemingly
Lite-On no longer supports with upgrades?
This link to the most recent update found, follow the instructions:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Lite-On/LiteOn-DVD-JLMS-XJHD166S-firmware-101.shtml

I tried to do the upgrade but the software refused to upgrade stating:

No matched drive detected

This utility is only for JLMS XJ HD-166S drive

Detected Drive

1-0-0-0 D: JLMS XJ-HD166 DTS6

I ran the program Drive Region info V 2.2 and it says: D: JLMS
XJ-HD166S DTS6

seemingly, Your LiteOn drive already has the latest firmware installed,
You now have to accept that, and in light of learning it is an early
generation drive, it needs replacing with a new model.

How did you determine it has the latest software installed? Just a
curosity question so I understand. Thank you very much for all your
help.
