No matter which program I choose it doesn't recognize a blank disc and it's
not recognizing that the drive is writable.
Windows seems to, because the recording options are still available and they
are infact enabled.
I had this problem on my old computer, everything worked fine and then
suddenly the drive stopped working. I've had this computer and this drive for
4 years with no problem and suddenly it has a problem.
I'm deeply confused.

It's a Lite-On Combo SOHC-5236V
Driver date is 7/1/2001
Can't roll it back, not sure I should uninstall...

Okay now I can't even see the recording options. I disabled and enabled and
now it shows as another E: drive and only says CDROM not CDRW

This does not apply to your issue except to add a bit of insite. I
like lite-on drives, and my friends do, but I'm beginning to wonder
myself if they are good. I've had one for years, and after burning 45
out of a 50 pack, I could not burn the last 5. They burn on other
drives by other manufacturers, but not this one. And taking them to a
friends house they won't burn on his lite-on drive. Maxell Discs.
My desktop also does not say RW but does work. The label does interest
me but it works so I shrug it off.

The laser in CD/DVD writers deteriorates with use. How fast it deteriorates
varies from example to example. Sooner or later, it can't generate the
power to burn discs. AFAIK Lite-On drives are no worse than any other make
in this regard.

Interesting tidbit of history. It is an old drive. maybe 4+ years.
I'll give it thought.

Hardware fails. Replace the drive.
