listing running programs before shutting down

How can I list any programs that may be running in the background so that I
can turn them off and/or delete those programs if not needed. Help in XP
under programs seems to ignore how to list any running applications or
programs because of browser/internet or running in windows, etc.
 
Right-click on the Task Bar>Task Manager.
In the window that pops up, you can see what applications and processses are
running; and end them.
